Trina Solar Sets P-Type Monocrystalline PV Module Efficiency World Record

A new P-type monocrystalline silicon PV module conversion efficiency world record was recently set by Trina Solar â€" by one of the company’s high-efficiency “Honey” solar modules.

The module â€" developed by the company’s State Key Lab of PV Science and Technology â€" is composed of sixty 156mm x 156mm high-efficiency Honey monocrystalline silicon cells, and generates a peak power output of 335.2W. That’s well above the previous record of 326.3W, set back in April. The new record was independently verified/certified by TUV Rheinland.

“We are thrilled to once again break the power output world record for P-type monocrystalline silicon PV modules just six months after we first set it. Through our advanced State Key Lab of PV Science and Technology Trina Solar is delivering on its commitment to be the innovation leader in the industry,” stated Dr Zhiqiang Feng, Technology Vice President and Director of the State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology of Trina Solar.

“The fact that we have broken the world record twice within just half a year gives us confidence in the huge potential to commercialize modules with higher efficiency, thereby reducing the cost of achieving grid parity and providing high-efficiency solar energy to more households in the near future.”

That would certainly be nice. And the continued record-breaking does seem to inspire confidence in that idea.

On that note, while many industry observers seem to agree, investors and the wider public responded to the announcement with seeming indifference â€" with the stock making only relatively minor gains. The future of the company could certainly be interesting, though, so keep an eye out.

Notably, the first China Photovoltaic Industry Association president is the CEO of Trina Solar. The company is one of the top solar module producers in the world, up at the top with Yingli Green Energy. If you’ve got solar panels on your roof, there’s a good chance they came from Trina. The company is a top supplier to big solar installation companies like SolarCity.
