Inventor Seeks Best Method to Harness Short Stroke Linear Power

I've been contacted by an inventor who has a promising technology that produces back-and-forth motions of 5 mm to 2 cm at a frequency of 600 to 3000 oscillations per minute, which can be increased or decreased, along a nominally linear path. That deflection distance distance is under load. The deflections are twice that without a load.

There is some deviation from linear, for each cycle. Up to 2-5% off perpendicular.

The total output could be in the region of 5 kW in the prototype system.

In order to both harness the power he's producing with his prototypes as well as to fully validate the technology as a practical, self-loopable, over-unity system, he needs to be able to come up with a good method for efficiently and cost-effectively capturing that vibration power.

We will be watching the comments here for your recommendation. And I'll try and modify the sequence of candidate methods to reflect the group wisdom on this question.

Whether or not this particular inventor has a viable technology, it's likely that at some point this information could come in handy for someone. For example, perhaps it could be applied to a rickety amusement park ride, where a flexing system can safely be juxtaposed to a more rigid system.

Here are some contenders for accomplishing this task of harnessing relatively small vibrational movement.

  • Fluid valve
  • Hydraulic
  • Loud speaker operated in reverse (would need reinforcement so the fabric doesn't give way)
    • On Sept 25, 2012, Dan Quale wrote: "Try the simplest most striaghtforward is using the reverse of an audio speaker/ for linear coil magnet testing for efficiency of input system. Coil output is directly related to the motion of the coil and the strength of the magnetic field. Both can be measured and are verifiable through well-known math formulas. I believe this method the best to show relationship of input to output because direct calculations can easily be made to find out the efficiency of the NEW input idea."
  • Linear electric generator (off the shelf?)
    • On Sept. 21, 2012, memoryman wrote: "I would look at a linear generator as an energy converter, designed for the maximum stroke length. Using a electronic stabilising circuit it would be possible to have stable output (voltage and frequency)."
  • C-coils
  • Drive shaft
  • Piezoelectric (usually needs to be a smaller size)
  • Bob wrote: "Acoustic Bubble generators work with very small vibrations. They typically are made with linear generators in parallel that each put out a signal, they are rectified and stored in a capacitor for use. That of just vibrate Piezo material."
  • On Sept. 21, 2012, Simon wrote: "Maybe the easiest way to take energy out (though not at 5kW) is to use an old hard-disk arm actuator. The coil is pretty light and able to move quickly, the magnets are strong and you can easily tell if the load you are taking out stops the resonance. If it still works, then make a bigger version with heavy wire and bigger magnets. Once you are taking out more energy than you are putting in, it ought to stop working. I suppose it depends how you've measured the 5kW output in the first place. Difficult, since in order to measure it you have to be taking energy out, so the above question would not apply."


Actually, we're looking for two sets of answers to this question. One is: "What kind of system would work best in an open source project, where low cost, simplicity, and availability are key considerations." The other is: "What kind of system would work best in a manufacturing setting, where those considerations are modified by capabilities of good engineering and mass production."
